Monkey Business and Other Sketches

Working on sketching kids....instead of animals. These have been forwarded to my agent. She's going to be working with me to create some nice pieces that include kids. I "think" in animals so these were challenging...I felt stiff drawing them and feel like they may look a bit stiff. Sigh. I'll have to keep at it to loosen up. I get all wrapped up in what shape the head should be, or how about those arms? Should they be thick or stringy? Oh, what a mess the details make of my brain! Once we get some worked out I'll be taking them to color. I think I may carve out time to experiment a little with line and such. Trying to come up with more ways to show movement. Movement in a piece is beautiful. Anyhow, scroll down for Monkey Boy and his puzzled pet, my IF entry.

Ooo! Ooo! Ooo! Nothing cuter than big puffy cheeks on sweet kids. Especially Monkey Cheeks!

Great job! It's not easy to draw children, animals are so much easier because you can just let your imagination go. With children it's a different story. I find it easier to remind myself constantly not to wanting to make them look like a prefect kid! The little girl with the teddy bears is adorable!

I feel the same way - I much prefer drawing animals! But I threw a person in this week's challenge illustration just BECAUSE I'm always drawing animals. Love your sketches! The kids are adorable with such fun expressions.

I completely understand what you're saying-- just have fun with it because your children are as good as your animals! Some of my favorite illustrators of children add a lot of little fun details to make them more unique characters. And the body shape does not have to be true to realistic anatomy... it just has to look like it can function relatively the same way.
